Beetroot Detroit

Beetroot Detroit, also known as Detroit Dark Red, is a popular variety of beet (Beta vulgaris) known for its vibrant red color, sweet flavor, and tender texture. This heirloom beet variety is a favorite among gardeners and culinary enthusiasts for its versatility in cooking, rich nutritional content, and ease of cultivation. Whether used fresh in salads, roasted as a side dish, or pickled for long-term storage, Beetroot Detroit is a versatile and nutritious addition to any kitchen.

Features

  • Beetroot Detroit is prized for its deep, rich red color both inside and out, adding a visually stunning element to culinary creations and salads.
  • This beet variety boasts a sweet, earthy flavor profile that intensifies when cooked, making it suitable for both raw and cooked preparations.
  • It has a tender and succulent texture when cooked, with a firm yet melt-in-your-mouth consistency that enhances its culinary appeal.
  • Like other varieties of beets, Beetroot Detroit is packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, offering numerous health benefits when incorporated into a balanced diet.

Uses

  • It can be grated or thinly sliced and enjoyed raw in salads, slaws, or sandwiches, adding color, flavor, and nutrition to your favorite dishes.
  • Roast, steam, boil, or grill Beetroot Detroit to bring out its natural sweetness and tender texture. Use it as a standalone side dish, or incorporate it into soups, stews, gratins, or risottos for added flavor and depth.
  • It is commonly pickled in vinegar, herbs, and spices to create tangy and flavorful pickled beets, perfect for salads, sandwiches, or as a standalone snack or appetizer.
  • It can be juiced along with other fruits and vegetables to create nutrient-rich and vibrant juices, smoothies, or cocktails, offering a delicious and refreshing way to enjoy its health benefits.

Application

  • Choose Beetroot Detroit that is firm, smooth-skinned, and free from blemishes or soft spots. Avoid beets with wilted greens, as this can indicate age or poor quality.
  • Wash the beets thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Trim off the tops and roots, leaving about an inch of stem intact to prevent bleeding during cooking.
  • Cook it using your preferred method, whether roasting, steaming, boiling, or grilling, until tender when pierced with a fork or knife. Allow the beets to cool slightly before peeling off the skin, which should easily slide off.
  • Store unwashed Beetroot Detroit in the refrigerator in a perforated plastic bag or vegetable crisper drawer to maintain freshness and prevent moisture loss. Use them within a week for the best flavor and quality.

Storage

  • Store unwashed Beetroot Detroit in the refrigerator in a perforated plastic bag or vegetable crisper drawer to maintain freshness and crispness. Avoid washing the beets until ready to use, as excess moisture can promote spoilage.
  • Wash and trim Beetroot Detroit just before cooking to retain their flavor and nutrients. Cut off the tops and roots, leaving about an inch of stem intact to prevent bleeding during cooking.
  • If you have cooked Beetroot Detroit leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat them gently in the microwave or oven before serving.
