Fordhook Giant
Fordhook Giant is a cultivar of Swiss chard, specifically developed and distributed by Simlaw Seeds. Known for its robust growth and large, crinkled leaves, this variety is a favorite among gardeners and chefs alike. The plant produces dark green leaves with thick, white stems and veins, making it not only a nutritional powerhouse but also an attractive addition to any garden or dish.
Features
- Fordhook Giant is renowned for its large, savoyed (crinkled) leaves that can reach up to 24 inches in length, providing a substantial yield.
- The thick, fleshy white stems are not only edible but also add a crunchy texture to dishes. They are typically around 2 inches wide.
- This variety forms a large, upright rosette of leaves, which makes it easy to harvest and manage in the garden.
- Fordhook Giant is highly tolerant of cooler temperatures, allowing for an extended growing season, even in regions with mild frosts.
- This Swiss chard variety is rich in vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like iron and magnesium, making it a highly nutritious addition to the diet.
Application
- Sow Fordhook Giant seeds directly in the garden 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost date, or start them indoors 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Seeds should be planted 1/2 inch deep and spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart to accommodate their large size.
- This Swiss chard variety thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil before planting to enhance fertility.
- Fordhook Giant prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. Water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and again mid-season to support vigorous growth. Regular feeding with compost tea or a balanced liquid fertilizer can also be beneficial.
- Harvest leaves individually as they reach a usable size, typically around 8 to 10 inches long. Cut the outer leaves first, allowing the center to continue growing for a continuous harvest.
Storage
- Store Fordhook Giant seeds in a cool, dry place. Use an airtight container to protect them from moisture and pests. Properly stored seeds can remain viable for up to three years.
- Freshly harvested Swiss chard leaves can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. Place them in a plastic bag or container to retain moisture.
- Blanched and frozen Fordhook Giant leaves can be stored for up to 12 months. To freeze, blanch the leaves in boiling water for two minutes, then transfer them to an ice bath before drying and packaging them for the freezer.
- Swiss chard leaves can be dried and stored in an airtight container for use in soups and stews. This method preserves the nutritional content while extending shelf life.
