Broccoli Shirley F1

Broccoli Shirley F1 is a hybrid variety known for its high yield, uniform heads, and excellent disease resistance. This variety is favored by both commercial growers and home gardeners for its reliable performance, robust growth, and superior quality. Broccoli Shirley F1 produces large, dense heads with a deep green color and a mild, slightly sweet flavor.

  • Shirley F1 broccoli plants are vigorous and compact, typically reaching a height of 18-24 inches. The plants have a strong structure, supporting the development of large, uniform heads.
  • The heads are large, tight, and dense, with small beads and a deep green color. They typically measure 6-8 inches in diameter.
  • This variety matures in approximately 65-75 days from transplanting, making it a mid-season producer.
  • Broccoli Shirley F1 is known for its high productivity, often producing multiple side shoots after the main head is harvested, extending the harvest period.
  • This variety is resistant to common broccoli diseases such as downy mildew and black rot, ensuring a healthy crop with minimal chemical intervention.

  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 weeks old and have developed several true leaves. Space plants 18-24 inches apart in rows spaced 24-30 inches apart.
  • Shirley F1 broccoli prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil before planting.
  • The plants require full sun, receiving at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and side-dress with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer during the growing season to support vigorous growth and head formation.
  • Monitor for common pests such as aphids, cabbage worms, and flea beetles. Use organic pesticides, row covers, and crop rotation to manage pests and diseases. Handpick larger pests and encourage beneficial insects to keep pest populations under control.

  • Store Shirley F1 broccoli seeds in a cool, dry place. Use airtight containers to protect from moisture and pests. Properly stored seeds can remain viable for up to five years.
  • Harvest broccoli heads when they are firm and tight, just before the flowers begin to open. Cut the heads from the stem, leaving a few inches of the stem attached. Store fresh heads in the refrigerator for up to a week. Place them in a plastic bag or container to retain moisture.
  • Broccoli can be frozen for long-term storage. To freeze, blanch the heads in boiling water for 3-4 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath before drying and packaging them for the freezer. Frozen broccoli can be stored for up to a year.
