Squash Butternut (Simlaw)

Squash Butternut, also known as Simlaw, is a variety of winter squash renowned for its sweet, nutty flavor and creamy texture. With its distinctive bell shape and tan-colored skin, Simlaw squash is a versatile ingredient that adds depth and richness to a wide range of savory and sweet dishes. Grown in temperate climates with ample sunshine and well-drained soil, Simlaw squash is harvested at peak ripeness to ensure optimal flavor and quality.

  • Simlaw squash boasts a naturally sweet flavor with subtle nutty undertones, making it a favorite ingredient in both savory and sweet recipes.
  • Once cooked, it develops a smooth and creamy texture that lends itself well to soups, purees, and sauces.
  • Like other winter squashes, it is rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, making it a nutritious addition to any diet.
  • It can be roasted, steamed, boiled, or sautéed, and used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, risottos, salads, casseroles, and desserts.
  • When stored properly in a cool, dry place, it can be kept for several weeks, allowing you to enjoy its delicious flavor and nutritional benefits throughout the winter months.
  • It can be used in a multitude of ways in the kitchen, adding flavor, texture, and nutrients to a wide range of dishes. From savory mains to sweet treats, the versatility of Simlaw squash makes it a valuable ingredient in any culinary repertoire.

  • Cut it into cubes or wedges, toss with olive oil, salt, and spices, and roast until tender and caramelized for a delicious side dish or salad topping.
  • Steam or boil it until soft, then blend until smooth to create a velvety puree that can be used as a base for soups, sauces, or pasta dishes.
  • Hollow out the center of a halved Simlaw squash and fill it with a savory stuffing mixture of grains, vegetables, and herbs for a hearty and satisfying main course.
  • Slice it into rounds, brush with olive oil, and bake until golden and crispy for a nutritious alternative to potato chips or fries.
  • Use pureed Simlaw squash as a healthier substitute for butter or oil in baked goods like muffins, bread, and pancakes, adding moisture and sweetness to the final product.

  • To prolong the shelf life of Simlaw squash, store it in a cool, dry place with good air circulation, such as a pantry or cellar.
  • Avoid storing it near fruits like apples or bananas, as they produce ethylene gas, which can cause the squash to ripen and spoil more quickly. Once cut, wrap any leftover Simlaw squash tightly in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
